Some of the active ingredients used by these products can actually do more harm than good. While they can really kill off fleas, the fact is it's not unlikely for them to harm furry pals as well as the people who own them.

The artificial pesticides these products rely on can actually put a dog's life at risk. When they are ingested or the sprays, powders or shampoos containing them are used inappropriately, convulsions, nausea and even respiratory arrest may ensue. What's scarier is all of these unfavorable symptoms may also be experienced by humans, including kids exposed to them.

It's for the reasons mentioned above why many dog owners are turning to various homemade solutions to keep fleas in check. They are just as effective as those commercially available products but do not rely on poisonous substances to work. So many all-natural approaches is available for you to try, each one giving you peace of mind that no one's life is in peril.

Opting to go for the non-toxic way is also easier on the pocket. For instance, one of the cheapest ways to kill off the eggs of fleas is by sprinkling salt on areas where dogs stay. Letting it stay there for three days dehydrates those eggs, putting the population growth of fleas to a stop. Mixing equal parts of water and vinegar is also a wonderful spray solution.

Essential oils make for wonderful repellents. The way they smell makes those tiny bugs stay away from dogs. Some highly effective ones are peppermint, orange, eucalyptus, lemongrass, lavender and tea tree oil. The dog owner may mix 5 to 10 drops of the chosen essential oil with a cup of water. After transferring in a spray bottle and shaking, the solution should be applied on sheets, kennels as well as on dogs. It's important for the pet owner to be aware that certain essential oils are actually poisonous to cats.

Nothing can be simpler that putting a bowl containing soapy water under a light source at night. Those pests are attracted to light. Once in the soapy water solution, they won't be able to get out alive. Another easy way to keep those insects in check is by using a flea comb on a regular basis. Dip the comb in soapy water each time to kill off all the fleas caught.

Different natural flea control solutions are easy to implement. Homemade approaches don't cost as much as commercial products. More importantly, pet owners can have peace of mind that their dogs and loved ones are out of harm's way.
