Ugh - The Car!

By Robert Baker

At some point in your cat ownership you are going to be forced to travel in your vehicle with your feline friend. Yes, it is a dreadful thought and many Pet Parents fear this the most. However, there are steps to take and tips for a safer more friendly riding experience for everyone. You will be able to say, "SUCCESS"!

Most cats do not like riding in cars. Seeing everything moving out from under their feet going by so fast is a very frightening sight. They are used to one home and it doesn't move.

A cat carrier or kennel is the best bet for keeping everyone safe and secure. This is some pros and cons to either the soft sided or rigid plastic. Typically you can attach a seat beat to either. This prevents the carrier from flying across the car should an evasive move need to be made by the driver. If your fur buddy is trained to walk on a harness and leash, make sure you get one that has the ability to be opened from the top. You as the Pet Parent need to make that decision, just like you would if you had a very small child.

For longer trips cross country you will need to plan ahead a few weeks before your trip. Take your cat on frequent car rides to get them used to the feeling of constant movement. Also look into pet friendly hotels and yes, restaurants for your planned route. You will need litter, food and water. If space permits in your vehicle, a crate is also a great idea for keeping everything in one confined space. You might even want to grab your cat's favorite bed and of course their favorite toys. Do not forget the treats!

Finally always be mindful of where your cat is at all times and never your fur buddy in an unattended vehicle! It is subject to theft, heat exhaustion and more stress since his Pet Parent is out of sight.
