Urine Trouble Now - Pee Stains On The Grass (Part 3)

By Nicole Wright

It may not even be necessary to re-do your lawn and change the existing grass. Water dilution might just be enough.

Having two Rottweilers, I made a decision to use Fescue grass on my lawn due to it's sturdy properties. This worked fine at first, until one of my dogs started urinating in the same spot the as the other one, immediately after the other dog pees.

Because the grass burning takes place in one distinct location and because the rest of the yard is lush, rather than installing a different turf I simply decided to try to get the dogs to drink more water.

Small amounts of very concentrated urine kill grass more than large amounts of dilute urine, so it's important to focus on changing urine concentration rather than just trying to reduce nitrogen content alone. If the urine is diluted enough, it's less likely to kill the grass, and in very weak concentrations, it may actually serve to fertilize the lawn.

More Water For Your Dog

Unfortunately, that's the difficult part. Obviously you should have bowls of fresh water available to your dog at all times, however, dogs typically only drink what they need, and when they need it. Luckily, though, most dogs do not require Fiji, Evian or any other expensive bottled waters.

Adding some flavor to the water makes it more appealing to dogs. The flavor of chicken or beef broth is something that most dogs enjoy. Alternatively, you can feed your dog lots of canned food which have high moisture content.

Careful With Salt

Before adding salt substitutes to your dog's water, be sure to have him checked by a veterinarian first. It is important to be absolutely certain that he is healthy and doesn't have heart or kidney problems that could worsen with a salty diet.

Your dog's health will benefit greatly from drinking additional amounts of water. You will notice an improvement in his skin and coat after days of a high water diet.

Obviously, a dog that drinks more water should also urinate more often which will cause an increase in the number of urine breaks. This may also mean more frequent walks for you, as you take your dog outside more. If your dog has an incontinence problem, don't give him extra water, it will only make the condition worse.
