Dog Show Responsibility To Our Children (part 6)

By Jade Davidson

In every instance where a dog is used within the family household to teach children important life lessons - lessons of responsibility, lessons of care, and lessons of sharing, it has been the dog's similarity to us that has done the teaching.

There will always be a curiosity that will spark up in your child's mind once you have a dog inside your house. The child will then ask many questions to you on how to better care for the furry creature. This curiosity will form an emotional attachment - a love for the pet.

Search with him for the dog's differences in behavior and appearance. Some interesting facts and insights can be found in like-minded dog books and videos - how a dog reads with his nose, how a dog's ears make him a remarkable eavesdropper, how a dog can fight with his eyes, how a dog has a tail that talks, how a dog loses the battle to keep peace.

These facts and insights can answer the child's questions and stimulate new interests. They are fascinating enough for bedtime stories. It could be a running series of: "Charlie, the dog who..."

You can further illustrate by helping your child picture out some images in his mind, you can say it this way: "You know son, our dog Chinee has such big ears because her hears help her hear more than we do. Her big ears are like scoops. They scoop out different sounds."

It is also possible for you to give further illustrations like, "You know, our dog cannot communicate to us through words that is why he does it by showing his actions. That is how they talk to us, by wagging their tail, by moving their ears..." You should also ask some questions to make sure that your child remembers everything that he needs to about the dog.

Bear in mind that your child actively learns from the dog and you. You should further help your child develop this sense of understanding. Proper guidance will ensure that your child will grow up to be a more humane and responsible person.
