Dog Vomiting: Causes and Treatments

By Jerry Welsh

There is nothing unusual in dogs that vomit. Even healthy dogs will be seen vomiting once and a while thus dog owners would not really be concerned if the pet up chucked the contents of the stomach. Dogs are not only voracious eaters, they also have the inclination to eat spoiled food and other non-edible substances. The tendency to eat too much as well as the indiscriminate eating habit often ends up in a spate of vomiting.

The dogs dietary indiscretion would often result to stomach upset so that the dog will be seen heaving and throwing up the contents of the stomach. Dog owners would just shrug the shoulders if the pet is seen vomiting partially digested food, plastic wrappers, bits of grass and even small toys. Dogs are indeed amazing as it would seem that they have a license to eat anything given that they can easily throw up anything rejected by their stomach. After a spate of vomiting, the dog will act as if nothing happened. The dog will remain active and will not lose its great appetite as oftentimes, it would eat what was vomited.

Up chucking what was ingested is the dog's way of resolving stomach upset that results from dietary indiscretion. It is not surprising if dogs suffer from stomach upset that result to vomiting given its tendency to eat too much and to eat spoiled food and inedible substances. The introduction of a new diet can also make the dog vomit. Vomiting arising from this kind of situation would not require treatment. Food and water is withheld for 24 hours to stop the pet from vomiting

The dog would certainly need medical attention if it vomits every now and then as in most cases, chronic vomiting is an indication of a medical concern. Vomiting in this case would not be caused by the dog's dietary indiscretion. Chronic vomiting can be a symptom of a number of medical concerns. Vomiting can be a sign of intestinal parasite infestation or intestinal cancer.

Chronic vomiting can result to dehydration. An anti emetic medication is the first treatment given to stop the dog from vomiting. A dog that throws up repeatedly may be suffering from an underlying disease. The reason why the dog is vomiting has to be determined before the dog can be treated. Professional medical attention will be very necessary for chronic vomiting. To resolve the dog's vomiting concern, the underlying disease that causes the dog to vomit has to be treated.
