Is the Dog Crying?

By Jerry Welsh

We humans would cry when we are in pain. Sobbing or wailing and the shedding of tears are explained by experts as the response to an emotional condition. This emotional outburst that is characterized by excessive tear flow actually relieves stress so that after a good cry, the stressed person is calmed. Aside from blotchy face and runny nose, crying does humans no harm.

Many dog owners believe that their pets have people-like qualities. In animalandia, dogs are among the most intelligent kinds. Aside from being intelligent, dogs are also noted to have human-like emotions. With this premise, is it possible for dogs to shed tears at the demise of the owner? Dogs are very active and inquisitive animals and this kind of personality often lands the dog in tight spots. Can pain caused by an injury make the dog shed tears.

Dogs can produce tears because like humans, these animals also have tear glands. Tear production is necessary as the fluid produced lubricates the eyes. The fluid produced by the tear glands protects the eyeballs from foreign objects that can cause irritation. Because the dog have tear glands, they can surely produce tears. Dogs in pain are observed to have teary eyes. Dog owners that enter the pet in canine beauty competitions are most concerned by the tear stains on the dog's face that mars the appearance of the pet.

There are some dog owners that take so much pleasure in observing the antics of the dog. But even if these people would not take their eyes away from the pet, it would still be impossible to see tears flowing on the dog's face. Due to the fur that absorbs the tears, the dog will not be seen shedding tears. Due to the presence of tear ducts, dogs can produce tears but dog experts believe that these animals cannot produce emotional tears thus tears will not be seen flowing down the dog's face.

Dogs form a strong attachment with their masters thus they are greatly affected if parted from their favorite person. Dog breeds noted to be one-man dogs are known to howl, whine and sulk when parted from the master. These dogs would continue to mourn for the loss of the master for quite a long while. These manifestations of grief belies the theory that dogs do not have emotions. There are reasons why dogs are called man's best friends. These animals have formed strong ties with their human family so that being parted from their beloved people can make the dog whine and howl. Dogs though would not be seen with tears running down.
