Ragdoll Cats Are A Great Family Pet

By Jeanette Parsons

Rabbit soft fur, beautiful markings, blue eyes, wonderful temperament, playful nature, hearty health and the ability to get along with other animals makes Ragdoll cats the perfect household pet. This is why cat lovers everywhere pay premium prices to own one of these amazing creature.

The tales of this breed's origin are straight out of a science fiction novel. Ann Baker's cat was struck by a vehicle while expecting a liter in the 1960s, she claims that while at the vet they did scientific experiments on the animal. The resulting offspring were extremely good natured and would go limp when picked up. The scientific community disagrees and believes the weird trait is a combination of passive genes from the Persian and Siamese breeds.

There is a lot of debate on where this cat got its docile nature and tendency to go limp when picked up. Some theorize it is passed on from the Persian and Siamese breeds. Others claim it is a genetic mutation. Whatever the reason this cat is extremely easy going, affectionate and easy to handle. The negative side of this low key personality is their tendency not to try to defend themselves from harm, it makes them poorly suited for the outdoors.

Soft, rabbit soft fur is one of the favorite traits of this cat. Because of the lack of an undercoat its medium length fur will not mat like other long haired breeds. Beautiful blue yes are also a trademark thought to have come from its Siamese cat ancestors. This breed is large and sturdy weighing up to 20 lbs with markings on its ears, face (except for a white chin) and tail.

If pet owners are looking for a cat that will happily chase toys around the house but not climb their curtains they should look at the Ragdoll. This cat is known for its playfulness and not for its hyperactivity. The breed is also very intelligent and will train easily.

These cats are one of the healthiest breeds in existence, they possess a sturdy body that can weigh up to 20 lbs. They also posses a long lifespan, with proper care they will live for 20 years. The largest health risk to this cat is its unwillingness to defend itself. Many Ragdolls have met unfortunate ends because they got outside and met up with an aggressive animal. Be warned this cat loves to eat and will not be happy missing a meal.

The ability to get along with other pet, docile nature with children and ability to be trained set Ragdoll cats apart from other breeds. With proper care and an indoor lifestyle they will shower their owners with love for years to come. Read more about: ragdoll cats
