Training Your Dog To Sit

By Steve Schultz

One of the essential things you will need to do with your pet will be training your dog to sit. This command not only will help to keep them safe, and reduce their risk of being a nuisance, but it will also prove to be essential when you are looking to teach them some advanced tricks as well.

So let's begin with this free basic dog training tips known as training your dog to sit. By teaching them this command, you and your canine can bond together, and have them be more disciplined. Eventually they will obey this command on their own, but in the meantime you get some quality time with your dog. Some of the reasons why you should teach them this command: keeps them out of trouble, builds up their confidence and can resolve some behavioral problems that can involve some dominance issues.

As you are training your dog to sit, it will be important that you understand that your dog is very willing to learn. Sometimes, the learning takes longer than we like and you will need to be sure that you are being patient and compassionate. Never hit your dog when you are trying to train them and always be sure to reward them with a treat when they successfully complete the task at hand.

A good way to train them is to wait for them to go through their motions on their own naturally. When they sit, give them the "sit" command always in the same tone of voice and reward them. Do this a few times so your dog understands what the word "sit" means. This does not completely train them of the command.

You are going to need to take this one step further and let them know when you issue the sit command; it means that they should follow the command. A good way to do this is to take a treat over his head and have him follow the scent with his nose. Take the treat back and cause him to sit and then issue to command and give him the treat. Some dogs will simply backup in this process and you might need to work a little with your dog to master this.

Keep in mind that during the training it is essential that you reward at the moment your dog sits. Doing it before or waiting too long afterwards will not secure the understanding in his mind. Teaching them this command with a treat before their mealtime helps because they are hungry and ready to work for the reward.
