Clicker training is revolutionary. It is so simple yet a kind and effective tool for positive beefing up dog training. The clicker is used to identify a behaviour and let the dog know that the behavior is about to be rewarded with a treat. For the clicker to have the specified effect your dog must first of all be conditioned to expect a treat when he hears the click. This exercise is called tuning in to the clicker and takes place over a considerable number of short sessions where the click is followed straight away by a treat.
To teach your dog to "go to bed" with the clicker is useful and great fun. When he's tuned in to the sound you can simply wait for him to go there on his very own and then click, then add the cue dog training command "go to bed". This will work at last and your dog will shortly associate the command with both the click and reward.
If you want to add more coaching to the session or need a bit more help in getting your dog to go to bed you can encourage him by putting a treat into the bed. Begin by standing quite close to the bed. You can hold your dog's collar while you do this so he will watch what you are actually doing.
Then sending your dog to get the food reward then clicking as he climbs onto the bed before providing a second treat, whilst he stands on the bed should speed things up a bit.
You may then move the bed further away so that the dog walks away from you to get onto the bed and retrieve the treat. Add the click in a fairly similar way. Then simply pretend to put the 1st treat down on the bed so that the click provides the only treat that can be found
