Dog Training Tips Straight From The Experts

By Kirk McGee

At some point in most of our lives we have owned a dog, and boy is it a rewarding experience. This is especially true when you have a well-trained obedient dog. Nothing says love like getting pounced on the second you walk into the door. Hopefully this article can help you to have a loving and obedient dog.

To train your dog efficiently, you must learn how to be firm with it. But do not yell at your dog constantly: try finding the right balance between being strict when your dog misbehaves and being a loving master the rest of the time. This develops a strong relationship with your dog.

When you are house training your puppy, remember, what goes in, must come out. To keep your puppies toiletry habits regular, feed him a high quality food 2-3 times a day at the same time each day. This will give you an idea of when to take your puppy out and lessen the chance of accidents.

When you begin training a dog, never assume they will not bite you just because you are a human and you think you are the leader. And untrained dog may think you are part of his pack, but may think he is the leader. Understanding what alpha behavior you need to show your dog will help your dog understand you are the leader. When your dog doesn't understand your human behavior, even a calm dog can bite you.

Stop a training session with your dog if you become angry with it. If you are angry at your dog, will not be able to train it fairly. You may be especially prone to dishing out unnecessarily harsh punishments, causing your dog to fear you rather than learn anything from that training session.

Puppies tend to nip as a way of communicating, and this should be curbed. It is normally a signal that they want to play. If you observe a puppy with his litter mates, this is the way that they interact with each other. When your puppy nips you, say 'no' firmly, and immediately give him a toy to play with.

Try behavioral training with your puppy before the age of one. You may not have much luck training some puppies beyond potty training if you start too early, but training an older puppy can prevent some behaviors before they start. If your puppy is distracted and thinks you are simply playing, waiting another few weeks to try training again.

Now that you know the best ways to train your dog, you can go ahead and apply these techniques. Your dog will learn, now that you have learned. You and your dog are bound to have a great relationship, as long as you have lots of patience and use positive reinforcement.
