Follow These Useful Tips For A Happy And Obedient Dog

By David Hamilton

If you want a well-behaved dog, there is a lot that relies on the dog's personality. However, nearly any dog can learn, at least a bit of manners. Depending on the dog's personality and desire to learn, you may need to work a little harder or try some different methods to get the results you desire.

To make your dog understand what you are expecting from it, you should reward it when it behaves well. Pet it when it obeys you, and use a soothing voice. You can even feed your dog a treat if it did something remarkably well. Make sure your dog understands why you are pleased.

Your new dog should have more boundaries, not less! This is a crucial time in your dog's life, as he is learning to live by your rules. This time is essential to bonding, so don't skimp on training. Your dog will thank you for your diligence in great behavior for life.

Be mindful of exactly what behavior you are reinforcing, so stand your ground and don't give into your pet's persistence. A dog will generally repeat whatever action has previously earned him a reward. Thus, if you give a dog food so that it will stop begging at the table one night, you're only making the dog more inclined to beg for food again, the next night.

Make sure you listen to your dog. What is he telling you? Your dog's behavior will often give you a window into his mind. Destructive dogs are often bored or anxious. Anxious dogs may act inconsistently with strangers. No matter the trouble, your dog is telling you how he feels when he behaves in situations.

When trying to train your dog, avoid accidentally reinforcing negative behaviors. This means that you should never reward your dog, with treats or attention, for doing something you're trying to train it out of. For example, don't rub your dog's head when they jump up at you and when you come in the door if you don't want them to jump.

When you are training your dog, do not blame it for bad behavior if it is sick. You should never force a dog to do obedience training when it is not feeling well. Take your dog to the vet to see what is making it sick, and put off the training until it is doing better.

Research how to show your dog leadership in a way that a dog understands. Dogs are not humans, and do not think as humans do. Not knowing the proper way to teach leadership to a dog, allows him to assume he is your leader. If you confuse the dog, it may stress him and cause him to act out in negative ways such as barking incessantly, biting, or tearing up your property.
