Pet Sitting: Caring for Pets At Home

By Johnny Chan

The home pet sitting is the most sought after pet care service of today's time. The pet care workers are now ready to go to their client's house to keep a pet sitting appointment than have it at their own places.

Not only does it make things easy for the customers, it is also easier to handle a pet in their own house. Taking them somewhere else puts them under a lot of stress and makes them difficult and obstinate. Even experts on animal behaviour recommend to pet sit at their homes for better results. Being in its own territory keeps the animal at ease.

Pets may be knowingly or unknowingly subjected to stress regularly. But if the pet is nurtured well by their owners then they are often free from stress. Besides fulfilling the needs of the pets on a daily basis, engaging the pet in fun activities such as games and exercise ensure that they lead a holistic life.

You can distinguish easily between an experienced and a non-experienced pet sitter as an experienced pet sitter finds it easy to take care of the pets and keeps them happy. The important task is to keep the dog away from the stress to accomplish his main task successfully.

We give you a few services that the client may ask the pet sitter to perform along with the services he offers:

1. In case it is the day for the pet's shot or vaccination, then the pet sitter should be ready to take him to the veterinary doctor. It is always good to heed to the customer's bidding.

2. Keep the pet entertained by providing the pet with chew toys. Appreciate and encourage the pet for good behavior by giving it treats at regular intervals.

3. Keeping the pet away from areas that it is not allowed in. These might be places like the sofas, kitchen or a baby's bedroom.

4. Watering the plants! Yes, some customers may ask you to water their plants indoors and outdoors. So do not let such request take you by surprise.

5. In case you fail to take the pet for a walk on time and the pet ends up soiling the house, you must be prepared to clear the mess created. Prior to leaving you must request the customer to provide you with a few plastic bags. Also ask the customer where the cleaning equipment is kept and take permission to use the same in case needed.

6. The place where the pet spends the most time, or the cage of the pet should be spic and span throughout. In case the pet is left with you for more than a day, then the cleaning should be done daily to ensure that the pet remains in hygienic surroundings.

7. Walking as many pets as the customer owns. Since many customers rear more than one pet, and may not have sufficient number of leashes, it helps to carry your own kit that contains leashes. You may want to confirm the number of pets as well as availability of leashes with the customer before you arrive on the first day.

8. Making the pet comfortable. That is one of your prime duties. The pet must feel comfortable at home even in the absence of the owner. You must be able to observe and analyse the behaviour of the pet. It's very important to be clear about the expressions of the pet. It is important to be able to tell an angrily barking and an excitedly barking dog apart.
