Easy tips for cat pet sitting

By Sam Davis

The lovely cats are adorable creatures. People in United States are very fond of these cats. The perplexing behavior of these feline creatures is often a reason for discomfort and trouble for the people who are beginning their pet sitting experience with cats.

By nature cats are known to be very independent. They are one of those species who love to be their own masters. Hence they do not accept the authority of their owners. In comparison dogs are more loyal as they are genetically more adaptable to follow instructions and thus they can easily be trained to follow instructions and accept the authority of the master. Molding a dog in a behavior frame is much easier than molding a cat. We just have to accept the fact that most cats may seem defiant as compared to dogs.

Cats are their own masters. And you will find that them to be quite unappreciative and maybe even difficult. Unlike dogs, cats are moody. They do not like to get cuddled if they aren't feeling like it. They will not even come near you. On the other hand, they'll come to you if only when they want to be petted or to play. They don't take to a person quickly, usually driving things at their pace. It is nothing unusual if the cat doesn't take to you quickly.

Dogs love gestures of affection and will respond positively to them. But a cat will accept and reciprocate to your gestures only if it feels like it. Try cuddling an unwilling cat and it will get feline instantly and rebel against you. A dog loves to be near its master but a cat needs its own space. A cat prefers to be left alone rather than being cuddled and petted against its will. Ironically this same cat will itself come near you if they feel the need to be tickled, stroked or if they are in the mood to have fun and play with you. Cats are by nature introverts and take time to adjust and accept any human. Therefore you need to understand this fact and give some time and space for the cat to adjust before it accepts your overturns.

If you try to impose your affection on the cat all your well meaning gestures will go down the drain as you will end up making the creature even more rebellious by your forced gestures. This does not mean that you should neglect the creature totally. If you choose to add a cat to your family you must ensure that you are capable to handle the responsibility to take care of them in a proper manner. You have to ensure that before you get the cat you decide on things like which place you would allot to the creature. Arrange for food before hand and read up about any medication which has to be administered. Ensure that you stock up all the medicines beforehand itself and another thing to be ensured is cleanliness. Don't force them to interact on the first day itself. Keep the pet in the place pre decided with food and water handy. Keep a watch but be sure to maintain distance to let the creature get the much needed time to adjust. Observe the movements of the cat and keep a close watch for ailments such as hairball. If you see that the cat indulges in excessive grooming, it would be better to speak to the original owners and ask about the previous medication and treatment administered to the cat. Contact a vet and reiterate the same to cross check.

If you are a pet sitter then you are responsible for the animal in the absence of the owners. Hence, if you see that there is any modification in the actions of the cat then you must not waste time in getting in touch with the owner who would be more well versed with the moods and behavior of his pet. But while the cat is in your care it becomes your responsibility to look after it well. Have an eagle's eye watch on the pet and if anything seems untoward then do not hesitate to take professional and medical help.

Like humans cats too listen to the voice of their biological clock and hence they will eat only when they are hungry. Therefore expecting them to eat when you serve would be foolish. Just like humans do at times, a cat too may be overfull and one should not panic if the cat skips a meal, in case it happens consistently then you may try to make some changes and seek help. You may hit the panic button if the cat does not eat any of her meals for an entire day.

Another indiscernible habit of cats is their sleeping pattern. Because they are so free willed they love to explore endlessly. So if an owner sets his cat free A cat that spends a major part of its day outside will be exhausted when it finally returns. However, if the cat tends to sleep all day long, without any kind of physical exertion, it might be better to take it up with the cat owner.
