The Major Causes Of Urticaria, As Documented

By Darell Methews

Medical literature have quite a number of entries devoted to the study of urticaria and what causes it. Let us try to look into them right now in the succeeding paragraphs. In some of the cases, we will also be sinking deeper and trying to understand how the various things bring about urticaria. When you say you are suffering from the medical condition known as urticaria, it is simply you experiencing 'hives'. It is basically a skin rash, but what is unique about it is the fact that it presents with (skin) bumps that tend to itch. Red in color, these rashes are raised from the skin, making them easily noticeable as skin bumps.

We come to learn that the causes of urticaria can be described as falling into two broad categories. The first category is composed of those causes that are of an allergic nature. All else - those that are not in any way related to allergies - fall under the second group.

When some people are suddenly exposed to certain substances or elements in their immediate environment, they can easily become infected and end up having urticaria. These allergic reactions to their environment is what brings about the urticaria. It is also possible that a person contracts urticaria after having used certain drugs or medications. It is not strange to see urticaria being caused by drugs or medicines. Simple pain relievers and other, more potent, diabetes medications are quite known for actually bringing about urticaria for some patients. Worth mentioning is the fact that there are some medications that are known to induce urticaria as a common side effect. However, these medications are those that are needed in severe cases or conditions, and one cannot do without them. But side effects are often ignored in favor of the fact that these medications are used to cure a greater ill or sickness. That's why they are willing to live with urticaria.

Now let us take a look at the non-allergic causes of urticaria. It has already been established that urticaria does not solely arise from exposure to allergens. Urticaria could actually develop from the simple act of scratching the skin. We have even some people who exhibit urticaria whenever their skin gets firmly stroked. Along these lines, we have yet another group of people: those who exhibit signs of urticaria upon having their skins rubbed.

As far as non-allergic causes go, rough pressure or firm stroking of the skin is not the only cause of urticaria appearing in some people. For some people, they can experience urticaria when they are subjected to extreme temperatures. We can easily separate them into two categories: cold-induced urticaria and heat-induced urticaria. Aside from temperatures, urticaria can also be caused by exposure to water. Thankfully, there are skin creams developed to deal with this particular manifestation of the condition. On the other hand, there are also people who break out into hives after being exposed to the sun for prolonged periods. This condition is called solar urticaria.
