Horse Related Courses at The Colby Community College

By Heather Toms

Colby Community University is a public community establishment in Colby, Kansas, offering a considerable number of 2 year associate's degree courses covering numerous study fields. One such course is an Equine Production Management Applied Science Associate degree. This is a degree crafted for scholars wishing to pursue careers in the area of horse production or in any other pony industry-related field. This programme covers intensive theoretical and practical education, allowing students the type of hands on experience that will stand them in good stead later in equine industries.

It's a necessity for students to take some courses in general education apart from the more advanced, equine-specific courses, and these general courses include:

- Oral Communications

- Physical Education

- General Education.

Scholars are required to go thru their equine-related courses at the very same time as the general courses. Some of the options students have in the equine and farming fields include:

- Agriculture Orientation. A course that teaches students briefly about the history of American farming development, emphasising career prospects for graduates who've gone through courses related to agriculture.

- Livestock Nourishment Elements This subject teaches students all about proper feed of horses and other livestock. Topics covered include origins, chemical compositions and values of various feeds; nutritional needs; the practical economy theory relevant to animal growth and upkeep.

- Pony Management Technology In this course, scholars are given an overview of equine industries so they can go through some hands on coaching in different horse production area phases. Students are given exposure to management talents and get the chance of participation in management operations.

- Applied Horse Performance Physiology This course combines performance physiology theory and their applications. Students are given exposure to varied concepts and apply each idea practically at the laboratory. Students must collect and then analyze and present info collected in the course of numerous activities related to equine performance. This info is then used to develop customs relevant to precise performance-related activities that are of relevance to the scholars.

There's also a list of optional electives that may be taken up to improve the degree options of students. A couple of these options are:

The college owns a few stallions that are utilized in its own breeding programs and are also lent out to the public.

Apart from their educational activities, scholars are given the option of taking part in an Inter-college Equine Show. The organising body, Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) inspires competitive participation of riders at every level of achievement by permitting them to compete at its shows, even if they don't own horses. This gives them the opening to progress on to national shows. The emphasis is on education and sportsmanship, with some fun thrown in.
