It Is Important To Train Your Dog Properly

By David Hamilton

You may think that it is impossible to teach an old dog new tricks, but did you know that there are techniques used to teach any dog new tricks, young and old. However, you aren't going to be successful in dog training until you learn what it takes to get the success you desire. With tips like these, you can learn some great skills in dog training.

When you train your dog, you should only give your dog food treats when it behaves exactly according to your wishes. The link between good behavior and rewards should be consistent and unvaried. Inconsistent rewards will send mixed signals to your pet and reduce the effectiveness of the positive reinforcement treats should offer.

Teaching a dog to know its name is the first dog training task a new dog owner should undertake. The name is used in calling the dog and just in getting its attention. Therefore it is more appropriate to choose a short and easily enunciated name than a longer and more confusing one.

Most dogs respond better to positive reinforcement rather than negative punishment. If you're trying to train your dog, reward him for good behavior and only scold him if absolutely necessary. Your dog will remember the reward for good behavior more distinctly than the punishment for bad behavior, making rewarding more effective.

If you are traveling with dogs, make sure to pack everything that your dog needs to eat, sleep and use the bathroom. Items like water and food bowls, paper towels and bathroom bags are essential to having a relaxing ride. Do not worry about taking a bag of their dog food with you; it is much easier to pick some up when you get to your destination.

To help with training your dog you need to be flexible in your training methods. Being flexible with your training will help you when your dog is struggling to learn. This will help you tweak the methods needed to suit your dog until you figure out what works best for him.

When you are first starting out in training your dog, try to schedule the training sessions to take place at about the same time every day. If you are making the training sessions a positive experience and doing them on a schedule, your dog will start to look forward to the sessions and enjoy them more.

Your dog will not be trained overnight, but you can read some valuable advice overnight. Admitting that you need help is always the first step, and reading about the subject matter increases your insight into dog-training methods. The above advice is tried and true; so take a friendly approach to dog training and do it yourself.
