Choosing Great Non Allergenic Dog Breeds

By Geraldine Dimarco

I know a lot of my friends would love to have a dog but opt not to because he or a member of his household has some form of allergies. This will be hard for those of you who just love dogs. Well, fortunately, this doesn't have to stop anyone from owning and having their very own pet. There are some pets that are less likely to give you adverse allergic reaction.

Here are helpful information on non allergenic dog breeds you can use today.People believe that it is the dog's hair that causes the allergy. This is true and not true. Dog dander is what you call the flakes of dead skin that dogs shed which latches on to the fur.

Small dog breeds are less likely to cause allergies because they have less body area, therefore less chance for dander, fecal matter, saliva and urine to stick to their body. Small dog breeds are also easier to bathe and groom. When you bathe and groom them faithfully, harmful elements and irritants won't attach itself to the dog. Look for dogs that do not bark too much as well because barking is another way of transmitting dander and saliva that some people are allergic to.

To really eliminate the risk of obtaining allergies from a hairy dog, you might want to consider a hairless breed. Some great examples of this are the Miniature Xoloitzcuintli, Tepeizcuintli, Chinese Crested, American Hairless Terrier, Peruvian Inca Orchids and the Peruvian Hairless Dog. The Chihuahua, Schnauzer, Maltese, Bedlington Terrier, Soft-Coated Wheaton Terrier and Irish Kelly Blue Terrier are other low dander dog breeds you should consider adopting.

There are some things you can do to avoid your family from getting dog related allergies. Do not let your dog into your house often, especially if he spent a lot of time outdoors being exposed to harmful elements. Vacuum furniture that collect dust easily like rugs, upholstered couches, curtains, etc. If you can, install an air purifier to filter your home's air of potential irritants.

Bathe your dog often to eliminate allergens from overstaying their welcome on your dog's coat. This is especially important for the breeds with longer hair. Search the Internet for reliable canine sites that offer anti-allergen products that has moisturizers that will not dry out your dog's skin. Be sure to groom his hair often and incorporate supplements that will give him healthy skin so it will less likely produce dander. Finally, find time to launder cushions and beddings he uses once or twice weekly.

Remember, different people may not have the same reaction to the same breeds so "test" or borrow an animal whose breed you are considering to adopt. If all goes well, these non allergenic dog breeds make for amazing pets you and your family will love for years to come. Enjoy!
