Introducing African Grey Toys To Parrots

By Jill Faulkner

Parrots prove to be territorial and are suspicious of things which are new, even if these things are meant for fun. Thus, you must avoid sticking new African Grey toys in the cage all of a sudden, as it can scare your bird. Few steps have to be taken so he can adjust to them.

An initial step is having the toy placed in an area where people are seated and where he may see it from inside his own cage. Make him see that people are truly safe near it and do not happen to be scared of it in any way. When the next day comes, put the item close to the cage, yet below his typical perching level.

Such is because birds feel really dominant over the things put below them and happen to be threatened by anything put above them. During the next day, hang the item outside his cage, specifically at the bottom part. Wait until the time comes that he would come down and investigate, and such may take time.

When you see him begin to poke at that toy through the cage, you must take the step that follows. Take the toy out to the estimated area wherein you would want to place it. Ensure that it still is situated outside his cage.

His cage would continue to give him security. Once he will resume his investigation or will start to play with it through his cage, you should then go and do the step that comes last, which is having the toy hung in the correct position. The bird, by now, is accustomed to its sight, feel, and sound, and is no longer considered as a threat.

The bird, in fact, possibly is so excited for the time when the toy gets placed in the cage, where he may truly play with the item. If, however, the bird seems scared by that object while this is hanging outside of the cage, you can choose to try the addition of treats to it. Treats may include those sunflower seeds.

His desire for treats will make him approach his new toy, and by the time that he touched it, he would start to trust it. Also, if you happen to be raising a young bird, have it introduced often to new items. This way, it does not develop a fear of toys which are new. Also, you should make use of items created with rope that is safe for birds, clips, as well as chains.

The materials deemed safe for the animals could not trap, entangle, or maybe choke your bird. These also have no zinc or maybe other materials deemed to be toxic. Such item types that happen to be inexpensive, despite being imported, cannot be considered safe all the time.

Therefore, in terms of choosing African Grey toys as well as items like it, you must trust those brands that are established. You must know that both effort as well as time are required for properly introducing the items to the bird. But it must not stop you should it happen that you truly love the bird.
