General Information On Pastured Poultry

By Tamika Powell

Pastured poultry is a term that is used to describe an agricultural method that is becoming more popular in modern times because of its sustainability. The practice relates to how meat and laying chickens, and turkeys, are cared for on pastures. This is different from the setup on most farms of today, where the birds are placed in indoor confinement. The practice is considered sound and humane. Additionally, it is believed to improve production, making the meat more nutritious, textured and flavorful.

Joel Salatin wrote a book titled Pastured Poultry Profits in an effort to enlighten farmers about this idea. He also helped reintroduce this technique at the Polyface Farm located in Swoope, Virginia. Herman Beck-Chenoweth and Andy Lee began to expand on the technique put forth by Salatin and came up with some of their own. APPPA, American Pastured Poultry Producers Association, was created to bring awareness. The members are primarily poultry farmers.

This type of feeding and environment is known to improve the overall nutritive quality of the meat. Still, the effect on the meat composition is not well supported. One study showed low impact on vitamin E, as well as the fatty acid composition.

The pens in which the fowls live are usually constructed from scrap metal or wood. White tarps or PVC pipe may also be used. This process is becoming more popular in modern times because it is beneficial to farmers as well. It reduces the capital costs and increases the pasture fertility. This practice can also be done for other birds, including geese, ducks and other exotic breeds within the poultry family.

The free-range technique was most popular in America between 1930 and 1960, and it was recently reintroduced by Herman Beck-Chenoweth. This permits birds to freely roam during the day hours and be placed in secure skid houses over night for protection. Predators can be kept out with the use of a guard dog, usually Komondor or Anatolia Shepherd breeds. This system makes birds less crowded and gives them the space they need to do natural things, which is not possible through other systems.

There are farmers who have eggmobiles, mobile homes that are used to store hens who lay eggs. Joel Salatin is credited with popularizing this setup. The idea is to give chickens the opportunity to move along with the cows, who graze in rotation. Chickens will scratch the manure left by the cows and harvest their own insects and larvae, which spreads the manure and helps lower the amount of flies on the cows.

Nesting boxes are placed inside of the eggmobile for hens to use to lay eggs. Foraging changes the way the hens produce. The eggs have a thicker albumen and yolk that is orange, which is caused by the beta carotene found in the grass. There have been studies done to test the nutrition of such eggs. They show that these types have less saturated fat and cholesterol but more vitamin E, omega-3s, beta carotene and vitamin A found in these kinds.

Pastured poultry refers to the process in which meat and laying chickens or turkeys are cared for. It involves allowing the birds to live freely on pastures and away from indoor confinement that is common at most farms. This method is considered more humane. Furthermore, the meat and the eggs produced from these animals are believed to be healthy and flavorful.
