Finding Cockapoo Puppies For Sale In Wisconsin

By Jill Faulkner

Cockapoo puppies for sale in Wisconsin are a popular hybrid available only since the 1950's. There's not a universally accepted registry or breed standards. Not every fluffy, charming, fun loving puppy is a true Cockapoo. Buyers should do a little research before choosing and purchasing a new puppy.

The American Cockapoo Club promotes the development and recognition of this hybrid as a recognized breed. The club keeps track of all litters born to ACC breeders providing assurance that your puppy has lineage only from the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle.

The North American Cockapoo Registry is working, through documentation and establishment of a genetic database, to bring this hybrid to status as a breed of its own. They currently have registration through 6 generations. The first generation must be a Cocker and a Poodle. Subsequent generations are a registered cockapoo bred to a registered cockapoo.

Other designer and hybrid dog registries may compile a history, but are not involved in setting standards or developing a breed. Dogs registered with the National Hybrid Registry will always be 1st generation hybrids.

What is a Cockapoo? They're a cross between a Cocker and a Poodle, hence the name. The result is a cute, endearing, fluffy, friendly, energetic, intelligent, healthy, and long living dog. They're great with children, friendly with other dogs, won't eat the cat. They're eager to please and will enjoy obedience training. They love walks, fetch games, and swimming. They can be content with apartment life as long as they get walks and playtime.

Most are toy or miniature sized, although the ACC does recognize a standard also. Toy dogs are those less than 10" at shoulder height. Miniatures are 11-14", usually 12-20 pounds. A standard is 15" or higher and will weigh over 20 pounds.

They can be a solid color, or multi-colored. They can be almost any color a dog can be: white, black, chocolate, tan, cream, red, or apricot. Hair is wavy with little to no shedding. This is a good choice for people with allergies. A haircut every 4-8 weeks will keep this dog handsome with a tangle free coat.

Prized for their hybrid vigor, still they do possess a few genetic issues. The parents should be checked for loose kneecap problems before breeding. They're also susceptible to several eye problems. Like all floppy eared dogs, they're prone to ear infections. The ear canal must be kept dry and free of excess hair. If you're uncertain how to do this, check with the breeder, groomer, or your vet.

Puppies are ready for a new home at 8-12 weeks. At 9-12 weeks puppies start focusing on the people around them, so expose them to lots of people. Plan at least 72 hours to acquaint your puppy with his new home and family, but don't introduce to neighborhood dogs until vaccinations are complete.

Agreement on standards and registration is still a work in progress. Not all breeders will be registered with a club. Buyers of Cockapoo puppies for sale in Wisconsin need to do their homework. Meet the breeder and the parent dogs. Ask for documentation on the lineage as well as health records. Caring breeders will be raising these family dogs in a family environment. Know what vaccinations have been given. Ask for a health guarantee for your new puppy.
