Different Types Of Rare Breed Chickens

By Tamika Powell

When a population of a specific breed of chicken is low in their numbers and hard to find, they are considered rare breed chickens. Three of the highest on these lists are the Andalusians, Leghorns and Sussex. People use chickens for many purposes from farming them for food, egg production, showing them and even as beloved family pets.

The Faverolle is bred for hobby and for showing today. Their appearance consist of five toes on each leg, shanks that are feathered and they are all bearded. Females have pinkish brown mixed with ivory coloring and the males have black with brownish red markings. They originated in France and they have excellent gentle natures, so keeping them as pets is also a great option.

One of the most majestic of these breeds would be the Andalusians. They have vibrant blue, grey and silver markings and walk with graceful elegance. They love to chatter with one another and are very healthy large fowls. They do best in free range environments and thrive in them.

The Yokohama breed of chickens are ornamental looking. They have lovely flowing long tail feathers and you can handle them with ease due to their gentle nature. They lay smaller ivory eggs but are not consistent and mature rather slowly.

The Sussex comes in a variety of colors but the buff and white are the ones which produce the most eggs. The speckled and the coronation are beautiful and good at laying too, but not as many as the buff and whites. These little chicks make great hobby farm fowls as well as egg producers. They can work well in a fenced or free roaming area.

Leghorn chickens have an Italian heritage and are great egg layers. Their capacity to lay eggs which are white, large and in high volumes are what make them so sought after. These are the fowls which give us most of the large white eggs we see and buy in the markets today. Their color combinations are red, white, cuckoo, buff, mottled and brown.

Orpington fowls most favored colors include jubilee, white, buff and partridge. Their appearance makes them look full and fluffy. The hens are excellent caregivers to their chicks and they quickly reach maturity. They can produce large amounts of brown tinted eggs in the colder months and make perfect pets due to their docile natures.

For hens who lay more in the winter than the warmer summer months the Brahma is the best bet. Due to the hens being heavier and larger than other laying breeds they sometimes break their own eggs once they sit upon them thoough. They make wonderful exhibition chickens and also are good as family pets.

Make a list of what you need in rare breed chickens. This will help you to determine which of these would be a perfect fit for you. Also be sure to pay attention to if they need free range living or do well in more confined spaces. Hobby farming, showing and egg production are the three main needs most chickens are used for besides being raised as eating fowl.
