By Geraldine Dimarco

Perhaps every family eventually wants a pet they could come home to. Especially if you have young children who love dogs and wants to have a reliable playmate every day. Now the first impulse is usually to troop down to the pet shop and get the cutest little pup that solicits the most favorable reaction from the rest of the clan. You are doing the smart thing by looking up what makes a good pet before deciding which one to get. Read on to find out what are the best dog breeds for families are in this article today.

First of all, understand that as all families, dogs too come in all shapes and forms. You need to put this in to consideration before making your decision. List down some of your family's needs and preferences and line them up with the qualities of the dog you are thinking of adopting.

Take a look at your family. How many people are living in your home? Is it just you and your spouse or do you have children living with you? How young are the children? Are they mature enough to take care of a dog properly? If not, then you should get a low maintenance pet that are good with children. Take the members of your family to the doctor to find out if they have any allergies that you should know about as well. Dogs sometimes cause allergies because of their dander, or if not, because of the irritants that they bring into the house.

Then also you have to consider your lifestyle and the place you live. Do you live in the city or in the suburbs? Some apartment owners do not allow pets in their buildings. How long are you out of the house? Unless you have a super well-trained dog, you need someone to keep your dog company for long periods of time.

Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are among the best dog breeds for families. These breeds are known to be happy, faithful and very eager to please their human masters.

If you are into small dog breeds, you should consider having a Poodle. These poufy cuties are not just for the rich and high maintenance people, they are good for almost everybody there is. Poodles are very intelligent and are excellent with children. For those who think Poodles are a tad too girly, you can try a Pug instead. Pugs, Shih-Tzus and Beagles are cute small dog breeds that are playful, energetic and fun to have around.

Unless you have a Newfoundland, or some other really laidback dog, you need to make sure that your dog receives regular exercise. Otherwise, they will become unusually rowdy and even destructive. Check your finances if you have enough income for the maintenance of your dog's vet visits, grooming needs and healthy diet before purchasing a pet.
