The Saint Bernard was recognized for its heroic acts as early as the 1700s when the Monastery and hospice were founded and located in the Alps. It is characterized by a powerful, tall, and muscular figure with a considerably large head and dense coat, these dogs are known for its loyalty and magnificent temperaments. When looking for a Saint Bernard breeder there are a number of factors to consider to ensure that you are purchasing a sound canine that meets with the necessary breeding standards.

To prevent against the possibility of receiving a poorly bred canine, one will need to increase knowledge regarding its general appearance. The magnificent head is large and broad often including darker mask details and a short muzzle with a pitch black nose and lips. The ears are positioned to the front of the head that is a dark color with a muscular body.

The coat is often dense and short or long that is not rough to the touch and does not include any shaggy, curly or wavy patterns. Colors are often white and brown, white and red including brindle patches. The dog should always possess a white chest, feet, and tip of the tail with the distinguishable dark colored mask on the top of the head; any other colors are disqualified.

The larger males will be a minimum of 27 inches with a weight that can reach between 140 to 180 pounds in comparison to the females of 25 inches and a mass of 120 to 140 pounds. All owners will need to apply basic training methods and establish rules from the youngest age due to the enormous size that these animals can grow to. Children are treated with the utmost care when engaging respectfully with the canines.

In order to find the most suitable breeders one will need to ensure that canines meet with specified breeding standards. One should always research the different kennels available and to visit these if possible in order to assess the appearance and temperament of dogs and the knowledge of owners. It is important that a fair amount of time is taken to determine which of these lines offers a quality and healthy pet.

Certified breeders should be registered with the national kennel association. The paperwork that is received with every pup should detail the parent lineage and exclude genetic diseases that the breed is prone to develop. Contacting the relevant canine authorities will ensure that breeders are in fact licensed.

Respected breeders will always interview potential owners before handing over a pup. This is because they want to ensure that their litters will be going to safe homes where they will be cared for. Possible buyers will be asked questions regarding space, knowledge of the breed, presence of other pets, and will detail exercise requirements.

The saint Bernard breeder may be asked a series of questions to evaluate their awareness and knowledge for the line. Puppies should always be collected from the kennel and not at a friend or different meeting spot. Research can ensure that you purchase a pet that is healthy and well cared for.
