Regal in its appearance, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel makes an excellent companion dog for people of all ages. The Cavalier is one of the larger toy breeds and has a compact body and round face. Its muzzle is short, eyes and nose are dark, and its ears are long and feathered. While they are usually healthy dogs, as with any breed there are particular health issues which may occur including mitral valve disease, cherry eye, hypothyroidism, syringomyelia, von Willebrand's disease, deafness, and hip and elbow dysplasia. If buying a puppy, it's important to request proof that its parents are free of any genetic illnesses. They should only be fed 1/2 to one cup of nutritious, dry food daily, as they tend to become obese easily. With proper care, a Cavalier can live for 9-14 years.

The Cavalier is sure to bark when it hears someone at the door, but they are too friendly by nature to be considered as a watchdog. They are primarily an indoor pet and should not be left alone outside for long.
