The Facts On Mini Goldendoodles

By Margarita Joseph

Goldendoodles is the name of a dog breed. These animals are a hybrid of the poodle and golden retriever. The name of the crossbreed, which was first coined in the early 1990s, takes the word golden from the retriever and doodle from poodle. Mini goldendoodles are just one of many variations of this breed.

It was during the 1990s that breeders in Australia and North America began to cross standard poodles and golden retrievers. The purpose of this cross was originally an attempt to make dogs that would be suitable as guides for visually impaired people with allergies. This type of breed is sometimes known as a designer dog. This term dates back to the later half of the twentieth century, a time when purebred poodles were being bred with other purebreds in an effort to create a dog with the hypoallergenic coat of poodles and its other desirable traits.

Usually these are breed to be companies. They are good for families that may include one or more member with allergies. Sometimes they are bred to be assistance dogs, such as therapy or guide, for people who struggle with allergies.

Some people may want this type of dog because of their love for golden retrievers and desire for a low- or no-shedding dog. Not every goldendoodle has a coat that does not shed like the standard poodles. Nonetheless, these animals are known for having low amounts of shedding. There are breeders who say that these dogs are hypoallergenic, but there are no studies that prove this to be true. It typically depends on what parent the dog is more like.

As is true of most cross-breeds, the appearance of this animal will range. They come in different colors, coat types and sizes. The main coat kinds: curly, wavy, straight. The wavy type is a mix of curls from poodles and straightness from retrievers. The straight kind takes mostly after retrievers and the curly kind is like that of poodles.

Usually these dogs are sized between a retriever and poodle. They range between miniature, standard and medium. The miniature goldendoodles occurs only if the poodle parent was a miniature. Standard types weigh between 45 and 70 pounds as adults, medium kinds weigh between 30 and 45 pounds, and mini ones usually weigh between 15 and 30 pounds. Standard height for females is between 22 and 23 inches and 24 and 26 inches for male. Some of these can be as tall as approximately 28 inches.

The dogs may have a coat that is red, white, gold, apricot or cream. Most of these inherit the typical bump on the top of the head that is characteristic of retrievers. These dogs are known for being extremely smart and easy to train. They are also affectionate toward other pets and people. Overall, the animals are easygoing and calm. They are active and require adequate exercise. The breed is quite healthy, but both parent breeds are susceptible to the condition hip dysplasia. Regular checkups should be done to ensure good health.

Goldendoodles is a crossbreed made from the mix of poodle and golden retriever genes. These dogs come in many sizes and color varieties, including mini goldendoodles. The mini types are produced with a mini poodle is bred. Generally, the animals are easygoing, friendly, good for people with allergies and active.
