When Looking For A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Stud Service Be Sure To Contact Reputable Breeder

By Lou Manning

If you are interested in finding a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stud service, you should approach a trustworthy breeder. He will need assurances that your dog is of good quality and in good health. He will not want to risk having his pedigree dog pick up an infection from an outside mating. You should be prepared to answer questions about why you want to get your dog in pup.

Genetic and sexually transmitted diseases can only be eradicated by paying stringent attention to the health of breeding stock. Many disorders are now detected by testing. You may be asked for documentation that your dog has been screened. When mating an outside dog to a show-quality Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeders will be very particular about the quality of the animal as the reputation of his stud depends on the quality of its progeny.

Even purebred dogs can be poor examples of the breed. When looking for a sire of high quality, check to see what awards appear in the background. Unless champions are found within the last several generations, the high quality required to advance the breed may be missing. Championships demonstrate that the dog's conformation meets the breed standard.

This is an ideal breed for an apartment. These friendly little creatures are very social and perfect as a lap dog. At the same time they have plenty of energy. They like company and socialise well with other pets.

Canine activities that can be enjoyed with this breed include agility and obedience trials. They have a gentle, affectionate nature. Many find their niche as a therapy dog. Unfortunately shedding can be a problem and regular grooming is a necessity.

They come in four colours. Blenheims are chestnut and white. Tricolours are black, tan and white while Rubies are a solid red. The fourth colour is the Black and Tan. The Tricolour has rich tan eye and cheek patches. The inside of the ears and underside of the tail is also tan. Black and Tans are jet black and bright tan while the Ruby is a rich red. Tricolours and Rubies should not have white markings.

The markings of show dogs need to reflect the breed standard. The markings on the head of animals with Blenheim colouring should be symmetrical. Chestnut ears and eye patches should be separated by a white blaze. The Blenheim spot or lozenge is another characteristic and is found on top of the head. The Blenheim name comes from the castle of the same name. Toy spaniels were bred here during the Tudor era and were the ancestors of today's Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

These spaniels are feathered. The feathered feet are another feature. The coat is silky. A wavy coat is acceptable but it should not curl. They need to be kept cool as they become distressed in hot weather. They shed twice a year. Some develop skin disorders from being bathed too often. It is an ideal breed for the elderly and for children. They are playful, patient and adaptable.

They need to be kept on a lead out of doors as, should something take their attention, they will forget all their training and be off in pursuit. Stud stock should be screened for major disorders such as hip and patella problems. Some develop eye problems. Mitral valve disease is also genetic. When sourcing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stud service, find a reputable breeder who can supply documentation that his dogs are free of these problems.
