You have heard the expression that you are what you eat? Well, your cat is what you feed it. Your cat does not have an choice in what foods are given to it. There are all sorts of foods on the market that are excellent, but there are also many that are simply garbage. This article open your eyes to some of the tricks companies use to sell their products and may be a bit graphic as well.
Think about your eating style. You probably love to grab fast food but it is not too friendly on the waste line. Your cat does not do well on junk food either and you may be surprised at how many companies actually have this as their main ingredients.
Think back to before we domesticated cats. What would your cat choose to eat? How about cats that live outdoors? Have you seen them eating dead animals? How about in the fields, pulling ears of corn off the stalk?
Second, grab your cat's bag of food. What are the first three ingredients? Those are the three foods that most make up the diet you are feeding. If you saw corn, soy, wheat or by-products of any type it is time to change your cat's diet! Cats are carnivores which mean "meat eaters."
Many companies have ways to distract you from seeing what they are actually feeding. There product may say salmon and when you check the label there is no salmon in it. Look at some of the last ingredients and you may find flavoring. There you may see that the food is simply salmon flavored. The difference is like eating a candy bar that has real cocoa or chocolate flavoring.
If the label says [meat] by-product or animal digest you may way to question your food as well. Animal by-products are taken from animals that do not need to be healthy (can be diseased, dying or dead) and include beaks, necks and other undesirable parts.
Animal digest is where we start getting a bit graphic. Animals that are included are goats, pigs, rats, horses, euthanized animals from shelters, supermarket waste, and road kill. A cat food with animal digest could be exactly that; a food made from cats.
Pet foods routinely say they are premium but this really has no true definition. You have to research what you are feeding and not take a pet company, vet or even my word for it. Start by looking for foods that have no grains and a real meat as the first ingredient.
