What Human Foods Must Not Be Given to Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are considered as surrogate children of the family and to ensure the health of the pet, pet parents would provide the dog pricey premium quality pet foods. The begging expression on the dog's face would be very difficult to resist thus anything the pet wants will be given by the owner. Because of the owner's love for the pet, the master's place on the bed or on the coach will be occupied by the dog. It is therefore not surprising if the owner will share the food being eaten when the dog begs. This kind of situation would do the pet no harm unless the food that the owner allowed the pet to eat is not tolerated by the dog's systems.

A dog owner has to have an idea what foods are toxic to the pet. Fruits and vegetables are included in people's diet as these are healthy foods. Dogs must steer clear of grapes, avocados, from tomatoes and potatoes as well as from mushroom and broccoli as these foods can cause poisoning. These fruits and vegetables can pose a hazard to the dogs' as they are not tolerated by their systems. Dogs eat anything and owners have to prevent the pet from eating fruit pits and seeds because of the cyanide they contain.

Dogs must be prevented from ingesting milk and other dairy products as these human foods cause dogs to have diarrhea. Coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages as well as chocolate and sugar-free candies are unsafe foods for dogs too. Foods with garlic and onions as ingredients must not be given to the pet.

Dogs in the wild have never eaten cooked foods. However, raw fish, raw eggs and raw meat must not be included in the dog's diet. Thiamin deficiency results if a dogs is regularly given raw fish and this condition can result to seizures and the death of the dog. The Salmonella and e coli bacteria in raw eggs can affect the dog. Poor coat quality and various skin concerns can develop in dogs that regularly eat raw eggs because of its avidin content. Excessively fatty foods can cause the inflammation of the pancreas thus table scraps with fat trimmings must not be given to the dog. Ingestion of fatty foods will cause the inflammation and the rupture of the pancreas causing the digestive enzymes to affect the other vital organs of the dog.

Vomiting and diarrhea are the manageable consequences of giving the dog toxic human foods but some foods have more serious effects that results to the death of the dog.
