What is hunting?

By Anthony Khan

The hunting ban has been a hot topic of conversation for several years and since the ban was granted in 2005, numerous debates have occurred. The scale of intense emotions that surround the discussion of whether hunting with a horseis humane goes on even though it has been banned. The farmers and hunters who supported the hunt feel that it should have continued. However, the people who support the hunting ban believe it is cruel and unnecessary.

Hunting is the practice of pursuing and chasing an animal on horse or on foot. The hunting ban was introduced due to the immense feeling that hunting was not following the practice of killing for food, but for fun. Hunting has a very long history and has been a popular sport for centuries. It is believed that over hunting many different animals has resulted in the extinction of several species. However, supporters of hunting feel that it is a traditional way of controlling pests. However, a majority of people felt that the act of hunting with a horse was barbaric and blood thirsty.

Throughout history hunting was considered very British and many people do not realize that hunting is worldwide. Although the animals that are hunted are often different to foxes and mink, they are still hunted for pleasure. In many countries all over Europe they follow the same traditions; however, the hunting ban is in force in the UK.

Although hunting still continues in the UK today it is very strict and must be done with a false scent and no animals being chased. The supporters for the hunts claimed this would ruin the overall feeling of the day; however, many still ride their horse and chase the scent. The hounds still chase the fake scent and believe they are on a hunt. Hunting is a varied sport all over the world and what one country sees fit to hunt another would think that it is cruel. Although over the years hunters have mastered their techniques and weapons, however, their most loyal companion is their hunting dog. These are different breeds in different countries and very rarely a horse will be used.

Many people feel that the hunting ban in the UK was destroying a huge part of British heritage and culture. Although people understood about the reasons behind hunting foxes they wanted it to be done in a more humane manner. Hunting will always be a controversial topic that people will have an opinion on.

With the recent changes in the government in the UK it is feared by the hunting ban supporters that the ruling will be overturned. However, this is unlikely to happen as the mass change and devastation that was predicted by the supporters of hunting never happened. Although they may not like the new way to hunt with a horse, thousands of people are still attending meets all through the hunting season.
