Dog Urine in Carpets: What to Do

By Dirk Gruenberg

Trying to get dog urine out of the carpet can be a very frustrating process. Often it is not easy, yet it is absolutely essential because if one does not take care of it, it can soak into the padding underneath the carpet.

There are also bacteria in the urine that seep down into the material under the carpet padding. With bacteria and urine in the carpet, and underneath, it can make your whole room smell like dog urine, even if all the traces of the urine are gone.

With that being said, however, in most cases you can successfully remove the smell. Of course, your first course of action after your dog peed on the carpet is to soak as much of it up with paper towels as possible.

Next, you should put vinegar on the spot where your dog relieved himself. Be generous with it and apply it to the whole area that was affected. Then, after letting the vinegar soak in, get out your paper towels again and soak up the remaining vinegar.

Now that the liquids are all soaked up, take your carpet cleaner and clean the spot vigorously with hot water. Make sure it is hot, or else it will not be as effective.

Some carpet cleaners have heavy duty buttons. If yours does, make sure to use it for cleaning the stain. But even if you do not have such a button, just keep going over the stain and it should disappear eventually.

The next step is to simply let the carpet dry. However, you might still smell the urine, so open the windows for about half an hour to allow fresh air to come in - and the smell of the urine to get out.

If you can still smell urine after the carpet dries out, pour more vinegar on the spot and let it set for about thirty minutes. Go over the spot with your carpet cleaner using hot water. Go over the spot until all of the vinegar is gone.

Then, once the smell is gone and the floor is mostly dry, add carpet deodorizer. And once you have done that, you can sit back and hope that the next accident will not happen to soon again.
