A Quick Guide To Blood Pressure

By Carole Ashley

There are no hard and fast figures which represent a normal blood pressure. And very often doctors and other experts cannot even decide between them what an ideal blood pressure range is for an adult.

Speaking in general terms, though, doctors and other experts would consider 110/70 to 125/80 as a happy medium of sorts, a reasonable blood pressure range for the average adult person, although somebody who has naturally low blood pressure may hover around 100/60.

For younger adults, 140/90 is considered to be a high blood pressure range, but as a person advances in age, such a figure may eventually be considered normal.

Blood doesn't circulate in an even stream around the body, but travels in a constant series of spurts. Therefore the pressure peaks in the blood vessels just after a heart beat and then ebbs until the next one. This would be the normal pattern.

This explains the diastolic and systolic figures in blood pressure - the former represents the highest peak, the latter represents the lowest ebb. And as arteries become stronger, this subsequently controls the force of blood and results in lower, usually healthier blood pressure.

As people mature, their arteries become less flexible and elastic, thus the higher blood pressure which would be considered acceptable. But it is important that the lower figure does not exceed 90 until the person reaches the age of sixty and above.

You may have seen quite a few studies indicating that hypertension, or high blood pressure in medical terms, is more common among African-Americans as compared to other racial groups, primarily Caucasians. This has resulted in added research with the goal of finding out whether the higher prevalence of hypertension in black individuals is due to their race, diet or economic background.

Some people suffering high blood pressure may find they just can't pinpoint a cause for their problem. Their blood pressure may be high on a regular basis even if they do all the right things to stay healthy, including eating a balanced diet and staying away from vices. This condition is known as Primary or essential high blood pressure. But it is far more common for people to suffer from Secondary High Blood Pressure, which is an increased blood pressure that has an underlying health reason.

Close to twenty-five percent of Westerners have some form of high blood pressure. Many people don't appreciate it is a dangerous condition that can lead to a heart attack kidney failure or stroke if it is left untreated. But that hasn't diminished the number of people who walk around whistling a happy tune, blissfully unaware that they may not be in the best of health after all, due to high blood pressure.
