When you start working with your new puppy there are some commands that you want to make certain that you start out to show them.
If you can teach your puppy to lie down at early age to some signal or command it'll improve the relationship between you and your puppy.
Put a buckle training collar or nylon choke collar on your puppy and attach a leash into it. You will have your pup sitting in front of you.
Keep the leash short as you begin this exercise. Hold it in your left hand, and then say the verbal command "down." As you do this, use your right hand to give the additional hand signal of showing him your palm.
The hand signal is important, because in the future it is important that he responds to both the verbal command and the hand signal. After you say the command, you need to pull him down with the leash. Do so gently, and place a treat between his paws once he is in the right position. Then praise him.
Of course, as with all dog training, you will need to repeat this step several times. Keep in mind to always give him the treat and to always celebrate a job well done with a lot of praise.
It might be necessary when starting to bend over a bit when you are giving the signal but afterwards as he or she gets much more familiar with the exercises you are able to stand up straight to provide the exercises.
However, the leash might come into play if your dog moves around instead of lying down. You can then put him back into the right position and simply try again.
