Dogs that Exercise Are Healthier Dogs

By Dirk Gruenberg

When it comes to the need for exercise, dogs and humans really aren't too different. Dogs, just like us, benefit from regular exercise. It helps them to keep a healthy weight and strengthens their muscles.

Of course, there is also the additional benefit that dogs how spent their energy exercising usually cause less trouble at home. Unfortunately, though, when it comes to the dog' exercise routine, many dog lovers don't know what to do.

So what do most people do? They simply go for a walk with their dog - which is one way of having him exercise and moving about. Some people also opt for taking their dogs with them on a bike ride or on a run. These are all viable options.

In addition, there are a few more things you can do to make sure your dog gets enough exercise. One could, for example, play a simple game of fetch or go swimming.

Swimming can be a real treat for dogs in terms of exercise. Most dogs love it, and if your dog is elderly and has trouble walking or running, then swimming might be perfect for him. Since the water will support his weight, his muscles won't be in for too much work.

If you have a dog that is super active and seems to never have enough exercise, you might want to think about getting a treadmill for him. Granted, at first he might not be too excited about the equipment, but he will get used to it.

Often, your dog getting used to the treadmill is only a matter of time. And once he is actually used to it, he will most likely enjoy it a lot. Which is really good in the winter, if the conditions do not allow you to be moving around outside too much.

Once you are done with the exercise routine, make sure you give him fresh cool water because dogs do dehydrated pretty quickly.

Always remember, do not feed your dog 30 minutes before performing the exercise and 30 minutes after the exercise in order to prevent any vomiting or nausea.
