Will Herpes Symptoms in Men Disappear In Time?

By Devin Brindinshire

Can herpes symptoms in men disappear after a period of time? If one considers the nature of herpes virus infections, then the answer is clearly "yes". It is not unusual at all for infected men to eventually see their symptoms diminish to the point of being undetectable after their immune systems have developed a high enough tolerance to the virus.

While it is not unusual for newly-infected men to experience regularly-recurring outbreaks over the first few years of their infections, it is also typical for both the frequency and severity of the outbreaks to gradually diminish as the body's immune system become more resistant to the virus. In some cases, it has even been reported that men have gone decades without experiencing another outbreak.

The eventual absence of herpes symptoms in men does not mean, however, that the infected man is no longer contagious. In fact, research shows that there is no correlation between the period of time that has lapsed since a man last displayed symptoms of an outbreak, and his ability to infect new partners with either HSV-1 or HSV-2.

Furthermore, extremely long periods of time during which no herpes symptoms in men appear are not an indication that no further outbreaks will take place. Whether an infected man experiences recurring outbreaks every few months for the remainder of his life (although, this is highly unusual), or goes years without an outbreak, the virus he carries remains more than capable of surfacing again in the form of a new outbreak at some point.

With regards to the original question of whether or not herpes symptoms in men can completely disappear, we are left with a clear answer of "yes". We are also left, however, with the realization that extremely long periods of success in preventing outbreaks frees infected men from neither the ability to spread the virus, nor susceptibility to new outbreaks of their own.
