Don't Diagnose and Treat Your Yeast Infection Yourself. Here's why. . .

By Cory Taylor

Oral thrush requires treatment via a doctor's prescription; however, only a few drugs have been approved for oral consumption. The reason these oral drugs need so much scrutiny is the similarity of the cell membrane in humans to the cell membrane of the fungal cells. So there is an obvious concern, and rightly so, that a medication will not cause harm to human cells while trying to kill the fungus (yeast) cells. This leaves the general public with only ten or so Candidiasis medications that can be taken orally.

This applies, naturally, to yeast infections that are internal; however, a majority of the yeast infections that people suffer with are of the external variety.

One class of serious drugs is the polyene anti-micotics. They bind to the ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, which leads to the death of the cells. Two medications that are polyene antibiotics are Amphotericin B and Nystatin. Amphotericin B is available to treat oral thrush, but is also used to treat the critically ill or people who are immunocompromised and have chronic yeast infections. It should be obvious that these chronic and systemic yeast infections are very serious and can put your health in peril. Nystatin is relatively safe to use orally and topically due to its low absorption through the skin and mucous membranes. Azoles inhibit the 14-alpha demethylase, which produces ergosterol, thus resulting in the death of the fungal cell. Polyene anti-micotics are also ergosterol inhibitors and have a similar effect on the fungal cells.

There is a form of Candidiasis called oral thrush that appears in the mouth. It is quite common in babies and children, as well as adults. Nystatin, an antifungal compound, is very efficient at treating Oral Thrush. A natural remedy that also works well is Neem Tree Leaves made into a strong tea. With Nystatin, you take the prescribed amount and rinse your mouth with it and then gargle. After gargling, you simply swallow. If you have oral thrush, though, be sure to see your doctor for professional evaluation. Your medical provider may have a new, more effective treatment he or she will want you to use. Another thing you don't want to do if you or your child has oral thrush and that is to rub the white patches in an effort to remove them because you can make the areas under the patches bleed. As a result, you may be subjecting your child, or yourself, to unnecessary pain if you scratch at these patches.

The number of women, just in America, who will have repeating yeast infections is alarming and amounts to one-third of all American women. The average number of yeast infections in women who get repeats is approximately four each year. Any person, and especially women, who experiences multiple yeast infections should see their doctor for evaluation.

Yeast infection treatment is usually quite successful even if the condition was not immediately addressed and has become worse. You will find that the successful treatment of any yeast infection depends, not only on the location of the infection, but other elements as well. Usually people who have an infection will not allow too much time to pass because the condition obviously gets worse and more unpleasant. If you develop an internal yeast infection as a result of a yeast overgrowth, that is a different matter altogether. They develop rapidly and must be treated immediately or they can become very serious. Don't be misled by the fact that a majority of simple yeast infections respond to treatment well and are usually gone in 7 days. There are other yeast infections that can have much more serious consequences. For this reason, never lightly disregard any symptoms of a yeast infection.
