Is Flea Medication Dangerous for My Dog?

By Dirk Gruenberg

Most pet owners are very concerned about their pet's food and health. They want to make sure that their pet gets the best and is safe. A lot of people and veterinarians are looking into the dangers of flea medication.

Apparently flea medication is not as safe as it was thought to be for a long time as toxic substances are part of the medication. This can be problematic in terms of health because there can be severe side effects to dogs as well as to humans.

If you apply a lot of the medication to your dog, some of it might enter his circulatory system. This, in turn, can be fatal, since some elements of the medication are quite toxic.

These toxins are used to kill fleas but can cause lasting damage to your dog or cat if spread unevenly. Some of these flea medications can also be ingested when your pet starts licking their body.

So it is essential that you do not let your dog lick himself after you applied the medication. You really need to pay attention to this, because the toxins could cause serious nerve problems - or even brain damage.

Furthermore, the process of applying the medication to your dog is not risk free either. The person who applies it needs to be extremely careful when doing so, so as to not get harmed by the toxins themselves.

The best way to go about applying the medication is with disposable gloves. Also make sure that you wash your hands thoroughly after doing so. Wash each finger individually to make sure you are good.

If you are this careful, you will be minimizing your risk, which is essential. Before doing all this, please make sure to ask your vet for recommendations in terms of what flea medication he would choose for your dog.

Your vet might even be able to suggest more natural remedies or give you more advice on how to apply the medication carefully. Whatever the case, your vet should certainly be your go-to person.
