My Puppy Bites - Help!

By Dirk Gruenberg

Even though biting is a natural behavior for dogs, it is not something we can allow. Everyone who has ever been bitten by a dog will know how painful and unpleasant it can be. So, being the responsible dog owner I assume you are, it is important for you to teach your puppy not to bite.

Having a puppy nibble or bite may not seem like the biggest deal. But wait until the pup is a full grown dog and you'll see the problem. In order to prevent this, here is what you can do.

Make sure to be firm. This is the first thing that you have to remember when you start training your puppy.

We can be easily swayed if they whine or when they start looking really cute. You just have to remember that you are doing this for their own good.

Always remember that training your dog while he is still young, will be good for him for his whole life, as people will enjoy having him around. So tell him "no" firmly, every time he tries to bite you. This way your dg will learn that biting makes you upset. Do this every single time he bites you or wants to go for it.

If your puppy really wants to bite on something or chew away, he can do so with a toy. It is always go to have one at hand that you do not mind him chewing on.

This way your pup will learn that hands are not for chewing, but toys can be, which is an important lesson for him to learn. It is also important that you enforce this method if he tries to bite anyone but you.

Please always be mindful that training a puppy is a learning process for both of you. Do not expect the moon from him after one single session.

Also make sure to be consistent. You have to be consistent when you are teaching your puppy. Consistency will help them learn quicker and better. If you are consistent with your new pet, you can be sure that you'll have a great and loving pet for a long time.
