My Puppy Jumps on People - Help!

By Dirk Gruenberg

If you have a puppy, you will know that our four-legged little friends can literally bounce off the walls with energy. Their energy seems to never fade or come to an end.

It is fun to have a new pet and watch them play around the house. However, this behavior can become a risk when they start jumping on people.

Teaching our puppy not to jump on people will ensure that there are no unnecessary accidents because of this behavior. But how exactly can you go about do so? Let me show you:

Correct your puppy immediately when he jumps on someone. When he starts jumping on you, too, make sure that you correct him immediately.

This will be the start of your pet's training and to avoid accidents that may happen in future. You have to be firm when you tell them to stop jumping. This way they can identify that you are not happy about these actions.

Instead of letting him jump, you can make your puppy sit. This keeps them busy, and having to focus on doing it right keeps their thoughts off the idea to jump. Whenever your dog is thinking about jumping on someone, say "no".

Having your dog stay in the sitting position for a while, as you greet your guests for example, can be quite handy. Then, after a while, and when the people he wanted to jump on have passed, give him a treat and praise him.

Being praised for his good behavior reinforces it. Your dg will come to understand that behaving well will earn him your attention and treats. So be generous with your treats when your dog behaves well. He will love them and try and please you more often.

If you can follow the above mentioned steps, your dog will learn that jumping is not desired. This is an important lesson for any puppy to learn. After all, now he is still small, but one day he'll be quite big, and he might actually hurt someone (a child or elderly person) if he jumps on them.
