Dog Food Today

By Ileen Krumins

With the number of illnesses and health conditions rising every year, many people are realizing the importance of maintaining regular exercise and an optimally healthy diet. Our pets most likely are not concerned with such matters, however, as their owners, we must be responsible for their overall health, as well. With this in mind, many dog owners are abandoning store-bought dog food brands for their own homemade recipes. Though you would think pet food from the veterinarian's office would be quite healthy, it may be surprising to find out that homemade meals are likely the best choice for your dog.

A totally healthy and happy cat has lustrous fur, bright and shiny eyes, and is very active and playful. Animal nutrition, in addition to dietary supplements, are key for a healthy and balanced diet. Making them happy by giving them treats could also be a part of their good health.

Also, active dogs require a certain amount of fat in their diet, which dry pet food typically does not adequately supply. A dog's diet should contain a certain amount of fat, which is important for the proper function of the kidneys and other body systems, besides storing valuable energy. If you would like to eliminate these harmful ingredients and provide only the most essential nutrients required for good pet health, you should definitely consider preparing your dog's meals at home yourself.

Pet owners should do a little research on some of the different artificial flavorings and colorings that go into each bag of food from the store shelves. Then there are the various preservatives used to keep the dog food "fresh" but have no nutritional value whatsoever for the dog. Ultimately, we consider our pets as children or family members, so we should provide for their nutrition with as much care and diligence as if they were actually human family.

In spite of what it may seem, it is neither expensive, time consuming, nor complicated to make your own dog food. Watch how your dog will light up when it knows it is getting a meal of all its favorite foods and flavors. Many popular dog food recipes include as staples such nutritious foods as fresh meat and veggies, honey, and peanut butter.

Stop feeding your dog science fiction, laboratory-designed, machine-made "foods", and give your pet food with quality that is equal to the love you have for it. While it may seem a bit odd at first to prepare your pet's food along with yours, but the benefits of doing so will make your pet much healthier, and surely make you both much happier.
