By Yvonne Ralph

Almost every pet, even the ones that have the most conscientious and careful owners, sometime contract fleas and ticks either from other stray animals or scattered eggs or pupae in the environment. The prevention and treatment must be a regular circumstance.

Fleas are a variety of blood sucking parasite that attaches itself to the pet's body and feeds on its blood. Ticks on the other hand are also parasites though not simply visible. Both fleas and ticks impair the condition of the pet and in a few cases the effect could even be lethal.

Ensuring the home flea free is the most significant step. Constantly treat your home and garden using products like Diatomaceous earth and fogging sprays. You can use Borax or common salt, sprinkle a layer generously over the carpet, upholstery, the settee, rug and any other place accessible by the animal. The salt or Borax will dry out the flea eggs and larvae, killing them and disrupting the flea life cycle. Leave for a couple of hours then vacuum comprehensively. Don't forget to empty the vacuum bag right away as fleas can remain alive inside the bag for a long period

Gardens, yards and favorite outdoor pet spots may need frequent spraying with insecticides to stop the breeding of fleas and ticks.
