Tick and Flea Remedies For Your Dogs and Cats

By Yvonne Ralph

Nearly every pet, even the ones that have the most tenacious and careful owners, sometime contract fleas and ticks either from other stray animals or scattered eggs or pupae in the environment. The prevention and treatment has to be a regular occurrence.

Fleas are a variety of blood sucking parasite that attaches itself to the pet's body and feeds on its blood. Ticks on the other hand are also parasites though not simply visible. Both fleas and ticks impair the condition of the pet and in a few cases the effect could even be lethal.

Keeping the house flea free is the most vital step. Frequently treat your house and garden using products like Diatomaceous earth and fogging sprays. You can also make use of Borax or common salt, sprinkle a layer liberally over the carpet, upholstery, the couch, rug and any other place accessible by the pet. The salt or Borax will dehydrate the flea eggs and larvae, slaughtering them and interrupting the flea lifecycle. Leave for a few hours then vacuum thoroughly. Remember to empty the vacuum bag straight away as fleas can remain alive within the bag for weeks.

If you live in an area subject to ticks it is critical to take extra precautions as ticks may cause harsh sickness and sometimes death to pets. Grassed areas, rear yards and favourite out of doors pet spots may need regular spraying with chemicals to prevent the breeding of fleas and ticks. Regularly trimlonggrasses and bushes, rotten leaves and other litters should not be permitted to gather in areas accessible to your pet.

It is important to check your animal for ticks by running your hands over the body searching for tiny lumps, these are typically ticks sucking in your pets blood. If found, care needs to be taken in removing ticks as inaccurate removal may cause even more poisons being injected into your pet. The safest methodology is taking your pet to the vet and having the vet remove the tick and treat any side-effects.

Prevention is better then the Cure - it could be an old expression but it certainly is true in this example! By frequently using a flea and tick product you can eliminate the problem all together and never put your pet at risk of serious illness from either of these nasty bugs.

A number of flea and tick treatment products are currently available, and it is crucial that you find the one which works best for you and your pet. There's no guarantee that one product would work miracles and repel fleas and ticks forever so keep looking till you find the best one for your pet. At The Pet Lovers Network we suggest a combination of prevention and treatment by employing a product such as Frontline Plus, keeping the house free of pests and regular grooming of your pets.
