Dry Eye And Vision

By Orlando Hattan

Dry eye is a condition in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for sustaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears or have a poor high quality of tears.

Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. With every blink of the eyelids, tears are spread across the front surface of the eye, known as the cornea. Tears offer lubrication, reduce the risk of eye infection, wash away foreign matter within the eye, and keep the surface of the eyes smooth and clear. Excess tears within the eyes flow into small drainage ducts, within the inner corners of the eyelids, which drain within the back of the nose. Dry eyes necessarily come from two kinds of tear problem. 1 is inadequate amount of tears and poor high quality of tears.

In inadequate quantity of tears the tears are produced by a number of glands in and about the eyelids. Tear production tends to diminish with age, with numerous medical circumstances, or as a side effect of particular medicines. Environmental circumstances like wind and dry climates can also impact tear volume by growing tear evaporation. When the normal quantity of tear production decreases or tears evaporate too quickly from the eyes, symptoms of dry eye can create. In Poor high quality of tears the tears are made up of 3 layers of oil, water, and mucus. Every component serves a function in protecting and nourishing the front surface from the eye. A smooth oil layer assists to prevent evaporation from the water layer, while the soft layer functions in spreading the tears evenly over the surface from the eye. If the tears evaporate too quickly or don't spread evenly over the cornea because of problems with any from the 3 tear layers, dry eye symptoms can create.

The most typical type of dry eyes is because of an inadequate quantity of the water layer of tears. Individuals with dry eyes may expertise symptoms of irritated, gritty, scratchy, or burning eyes, a feeling of something in their eyes.
