How Women Can Reduce Their Risk Of Heart Disease

By Edward French

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is responsible for almost 1 million deaths annually in the United States, half of which are women. But on the positive side of things, most of heart disease's leading causes are within your power to control, namely smoking (quit it cold turkey if you can), obesity (proper diet AND exercise) and physical inactivity (again, exercise).

We have come up with some quick and handy tips that can help you minimize the chances of heart disease.

Add heart-smart foods. Do not misconstrue being heart-smart as totally giving up on sumptuous meals. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are heart-healthy winners. We recommend drinking orange juice, particularly Minute Maid (tm) Premium Heart Wise, which experts say can actually lower your cholesterol level.

Get a move on. Keep your heart healthy with some physical activity. No need to rush. When buying groceries, park at the farthest parking spot, take up dancing, walk at least 15 minutes a day, and use the stairs and forgo the elevator.

Weigh your options. If you are overweight, you are endangering your heart. Overweight people need to lose a mere five to ten percent of their current body weight in order to significantly minimize their chances of contracting heart disease. Eat healthy foods and get regular exercise and you can easily reach a healthy target weight.

The proof is in the pudding. Pay attention to figures and enumerate your health risks. If you notice any unusual symptoms, be very, very concerned, and do the same for your health even if you do not notice any. Visit your health care professional and have your cholesterol checked regularly.

Another noteworthy event has been the recent team-up of Minute Maid (tm) and WomenHeart. The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease has been working for some time to keep women educated on the hazardous effects of heart disease, and for those who already suffer from it, to assuage any feelings of emotional or physical suffering.

Incidentally, there have been several awareness campaigns launched by American food and drink manufacturers, including the Minute Maid (tm) Premium Heart Wise 8-Week Challenge for Health and Wellness, launched by the makers of Minute Maid Premium Heart Wise (tm) orange juice - they encourage people to drink at least two glasses of eight fluid ounce servings per meal in order to facilitate healthy and wholesome living.
