Industrial diseases are becoming ever rarer as the level of awareness and also the level of protection is constantly improving. Nonetheless industrial diseases are still very much a threat because many of them cannot be completely prevented and so workers do sometimes still get them. Thankfully many industrial diseases are now no longer a threat or pose very little threat at most but there are still some which workers are at risk from which are also very debilitating.
VWF or vibration white finger is one industrial disease which can be very debilitating for the person who has it. VWF is common in people who spend a lot of time working on machines and tools which vibrate very heavily through their hands and fingers. A lot of the symptoms of VWF are fairly mild such as discolouration in the fingers and pins and needles. There are however symptoms which make the disease very debilitating such as the spasms in the fingers which the person can't control.
Industrial deafness is another disease which presents a lot of problems for any person who develops it. People who get this disease do so from working in noisy environments for a long time but they are used to having full hearing. When industrial deafness sets in and workers lose either part or all of their hearing they have to face the difficult reality that they won't be able to do a lot of things anymore that they previously could.
Then there are the many diseases which are related to asbestos fibre inhalation. Diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer and pleural thickening can all drastically affect a person's standard of living. All of them can cause breathlessness and leave a person unable to do any strenuous activities.
There are many more debilitating industrial diseases than just those mentioned previously too. Different industrial diseases come from different industries and some of the diseases are not as bad as others. Some workers can get skin disease from working with chemicals while metal and glass workers can lose some of their sight through working with red and white hot materials which produce radiation.
