Shorten Your Recovery Time with these Techniques for Coping with a Fitness Injury

By Dr Graeme Teague

You can shorten your recovery time from a fitness injury by remaining positive. New forms of stress and anxiety make sports injuries a serious concern. The period of recovery is a dangerous time because it can cause the injured person to develop emotional hardships which can then lead to depression and self destructive behavior. But most athletes and casual sports lovers haven't actually considered how they would cope if injured. This article will offer several insights for coping with sports injuries and what can be done while recovering.

In sports, most people are aware of the power of visualization. So why not use this easy mental technique to help your recovering rate. This tool of visualization is a well used, and successful tool for many athletes and other performances based activities. The hard part is finding a quiet room with no distractions that you can relax in. It is as simple as playing a mental movie. This movie should focus on seeing yoruself engaged in your sport. It is key that you also visualize the movement that you were doing when you were injured. Your visualization sessions will be more powerful if you add as much detail in them as possible. Also, try to engage as many senses as possible, too. Doctors recommend avoiding total inactivity if you don't need to be immobile, depending on the injury. This approach has many benefits. Being active again can help your state of mind. As an example, you can work out your upper body if the injury is to your lower extremities or vice versa. You will be surprised at how much good even just going for a walk will do for you. When doing any type of alternate activity, be sure to avoid straining or aggravating your injury.

Some injuries are so so severe, however, that they keep you from doing any kind of physical exercise.

Your state of mind may be negatively impacted by the side effects of this type of situation. One such affect is weight gain. A person who is usually active will be in shape with minimal body fat. Weight gain for such a person would take a psychological toll, as you can imagine. Closely monitoring what you eat can help you avoid this problem entirely.

Establish recovery goals shortly after the initial injury. Goals and milestones are extremely important for your progress, forward movement, and your peace of mind. When you set goals for yourself, you are being proactive about your recovery and are taking control of your situation. Goals also provide great motivation for recovery and returning to activity. You can even enlist the help of your doctor by asking what reasonable goals you can make for your recovery. Because your doctor knows exactly what needs to be done, they are the best person to help you with this. Knowledge, support mechanisms, motivation and of course your basic personality will all factor into your approach to coping with a fitness injury. For those who choose not to increase their knowledge about their injury or the best ways to heal it will of course suffer more.
