Finding The Best Miniature Poodle Breeder

By Chloe Gib

Getting a dog is a big decision. Especially when you purchase a puppy, it might be around for the next decade and a half of your life. Because it is such a big decision, finding the right miniature poodle breeder is very important to making sure it is a big decision that comes out happily. There are many things to consider in making your decision.

The miniature poodle is a down-sized version of the traditional, or standard size. It stands approximately 10 to 15 inches, with slight variations in this size based on the country you are in. Pet puppies may grow up to be slightly smaller or larger than these sizes, but dogs must meet this height requirement in order to be shown.

Poodles are a great breed for people with kids and active lifestyles. A well-bred poodle is a delightful dog, happy, smart, and fully of playful energy. Miniatures are a good size for a lot of people, being bigger than the fragile toys but smaller than the large standards. Larger miniatures often make the best choice for families with small children.

A lot of time and effort goes into finding the right puppy. Whether the person is a miniature, standard, or teacup poodle breeder, there are certain things that are necessary in order to give the puppies a good start. Healthy parents are the most important.

The parents of a show or pet quality puppy should be free of any health defects. This means genetic testing for conditions that are common within the breed, as well as general evaluation for potential problems. They should not be too young, as some of these conditions do not appear until adulthood. Typically, anything under a year is too young, and two is better.

While the environment has a heck of a lot to do with a dog's temperament, genetics also play a role. There are many happy, well-adjusted dogs out there and that means there is no reason to even consider a puppy from parents with bad temperaments. Also important is making sure that the breeder exposes the puppies to lots of human attention and new things during their first few weeks of life.

Be cautious when choosing your miniature poodle breeder. The dog he or she breeds will be with you for a long time to come, and should not be chosen by a sign on the highway, no matter how tempting 'tiny toy poodles for sale here' might be. Be aware that the breeder will probably ask you questions, as well. He or she just wants to make sure you will provide a great home for one of their wonderful dogs.
