Reptiles - Get Your First Crested Gecko

By Stephen Ayer

If you are considering raising exotic pets and reptiles, a crested gecko might be exactly what you are looking for. This lizard takes well to being handled and happens to be a hardy animal, therefore looking after it is easy. In addition to that, they're irresistibly adorable. You will likely find yourself spending visiting time with yours regularly.

These beautiful creatures have stripes and spots on their bodies. Lines may be very straight, or they may appear like those found on a tiger, which has both thin and wide stripes. Hues for the lizard can include gray, brown, yellow and red. Usually, the colors are very vibrant.

Right above the eyes where an eyelash would normally be is a crest. This is what earns this gecko its nick name. This crest works its way around the eye and expands all the way down to the tail. Strangely enough, some individuals just have this element on one side of their bodies. Even so, this spine-like feature could be quite threatening if this beast were as huge as a Tyrannosaurus.

Certainly, they get nowhere as large as that. On the shorter side, they get to be around six inches. On the more substantial side, they get up to about 10 inches, with the adult males being larger than the females. Males also have more substantial pre femoral pores next to their vent, which can be hardly noticeable in females. Most breeders use this in order to identify a male when sexing.

If you like to speak with your pets, you can expect to adore a crested gecko. They don't always do so, but many times they will chirp. This is not like a cricket, or perhaps a bird, but it does seem to be a chirp. It may be close to something a squirrel would do, although not as loud. This is done to demonstrate excitement and also to be societal. It is pleasurable and fascinating, and the good news is that you won't have to worry about it getting annoying. They just don't make that sound as loud as a parrot can when it squawks.

Should you be certain you should get a crested gecko, you will need to know that you should be ready to take good care of your new friend a very long time. Healthy and balanced, content geckos can exist as many as a decade, and many live as long as 15 years. Contingent on your own age, you might have your new exotic pet the rest of your life.
