The Best Way To Teach Your Dog Some Tricks

By Willie Green

Teaching your dogs new tricks is actually pretty easy to do. Some dogs learn faster than others. The age, breed, and personality of the dog are all factors. However, just about any dog can learn if you know how to teach dogs tricks in the best way.

The saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is so untrue. Many dogs that are ten years old can still learn new things.

Not everything is accountable to your dog's intelligence. Learning is easier for dogs who want to please their masters than those dogs who don't care.

If you've got a dog that has already been house trained, then you can continue the same process with tricks. That is, rewarding the right behaviour.

Start by teaching your pet a very easy trick. You want your dog to get that she'll get a reward if she can do it right. Easy tricks include shaking hands and catching a ball.

You should not teach two tricks at the same time. A trick should be learned by heart before you proceed to the next one. This requires patience. Remember that you will get bored a long time before the dog does. It's exactly like when you and your dog play fetch. Your dog could go on playing for hours while you feel like quitting already. This holds true for tricks, too.

Nevertheless it is important to keep the training sessions short in the beginning. Knowing how to teach dogs tricks in a way that gets results means practicing a trick two or three times a day but only for a few minutes each time at first.

Remember that it can be frustrating for the dog because at first she will not understand what you want of her. She might think that you want her to do one of her old tricks, and she will do it. But this time, that's not what you want, and that can be confusing for her.

You should give little rewards when your dog does something right, no matter how little, as you begin training her.

You should give her the full reward only when she can do the new trick perfectly. Do this again and again until she executes the trick completely each time. You can mix the rewards you give with praises after that. Praise should always be given. Then you will know how to teach dogs tricks the best way and even become an expert.
