You Can Easily Train Your Dog If You Follow These Tips

By Cecilia Burke

Virtually every negative dog behavior, including barking, growling, and aggression, can be prevented or counteracted with proper training. While it might not be possible to completely eliminate these behaviors, applying the advice in this article will still train the dog to a large degree. Proper training can turn any dog into the perfect pet.

Keep your dog moving, and it will be easier to train. It will also have a healthier life. Dogs are not made to sit around. Dogs need to have time to run around so they are happy and healthy. Do activities with your favorite four-legged friend, such as taking your dog running, playing fetch, or going to an agility class. Try not to let boredom set in with your dog by keeping him active as much as possible.

Dogs have a tendency to zone in on one particular thing until something else grabs their attention. Eventually, you will be able to ensure that your dog is more focused on you and your commands than other distractions.

Give challenges to your dog on a regular basis. Throw "pop quizzes" occasionally to be sure he is not getting out of practice.

Everyone in the family should be encouraged to maintain consistency with the commands used to train the dog. For instance, your dog is going to get confused if you are saying "drop it" after he fetches a stick and your child tells him "let go." If all members of the family use the same commands, training your dog will be much more easier.

Giving up is not an option when it comes to training your pet. Through constant and positive reinforcement, you will be able to train your dog to retain the behaviors you teach them. Your dog requires food, shelter, companionship, and instruction from you every day, throughout your relationship.

Try using a clicker to help reinforce good behavior. In order to begin, simply create a happy mental link between the clicker's sound and something the dog enjoys. Try clicking and giving your dog a treat at the same time. Do this several times during the day. Over time, your dog will learn that the clicking noise means he is doing something correctly.

Do not let other sources of stress affect your training sessions with your dog. Always use a positive tone of voice with your dog unless they have done something wrong.

More often than not, dogs bite out of fear more than anything else. This can happen if the dog feels backed into a corner or otherwise unable to escape a bad situation. Don't forcefully train your dog. This makes your dog more likely to bite. A puppy is expecting you to be the leader of his pack and is anxious to please you.

As you can see, pets are trained for many different reasons. Since dogs are eager to please, most breeds are easy to train. Hopefully, the information contained here has provided you with some inspiration and ideas to help you train your adoring pet and friend.
