Do dogs really hate cats?

By Jerry Welsh

A person can reach the limit of his/her patience if the chosen pets are dogs and cats given that these animals cannot live peacefully in one household. The quarrel of dogs and cats have been the topic of many children's stories. The warfare between dogs and cats has been going on for years. Keeping a dog and a cat in one household would be rather difficult as these two animals have the tendency to fight.

Dogs love to chase cats and cats would scream and hiss at the dog thus it is not really surprising why these two animals cannot stand each other. A pet parent that has dared to keep a dog and a cat together in one household is to be admired for having a lot of patience. What do you think are the reasons why dogs seem to hate cats so much?

The inability to co-exist can be attributed to the difference in personalities. We know how playful dogs are. Human's best friends are social creatures too. Being social animals, a dog would need to mingle not only with its human family but with other animals as well. Aloof, independent and haughty - these are the adjectives that best describe a cat. Dogs are very affectionate animals that would always demand attention from the family as if left alone for quite a while, these animals can develop destructive behavior due to separation anxiety. This is not so with a cat. Being independent creatures, cats would not really mind if the attention of the owner is not received. Cats are not very demanding pets as the owner simply need to provide the cat with its basic needs. Cats are placid undemanding pets. Dogs are always on the go as these animals are very energetic.

Dog are friendly and playful animals thus it would not be surprising if the dog will persuade the cat to play. However, the play bow of the dog can be misconstrued by the cat as an aggressive or threatening stance. Apart from the size which is much bigger than the cat's, a dog would really have an intimidating appearance . It would not be surprising if the cat would scream and vault away from the clutches of the dog.

Cats though really have a reason for hating dogs. Dogs are predators. A dog would leap in an instance when an interesting scent or movement is noticed. Dogs would hunt any animal and a cat can be one of the dog's preys. Surely the cat is justified to hate the dog and the dog to hate the cat.
